The Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG) is a competitive grant designed to support targeted technical assistance, training and other activities leading to the development or expansion of small and emerging private businesses in rural areas that have fewer than 50 employees and less than $1 million in gross revenues. Programmatic activities are separated into enterprise or opportunity type grant activities.
Painted Desert Demonstration Projects, Inc. (PDDP) and its program partners propose to develop a Native American Regional Food Hub that will improve the current food system and will serve as a catalyst to spur economic development of food related business in the west Navajo communities such as Tolani Lake, Leupp, Birdsprings, and the surrounding rural areas in Coconino County and Navajo County. The overarching goal of this program is to increase access, domestic consumption and affordability of locally and regionally produced agricultural products and traditional foods and to develop new markets and economic opportunities for small food business, farms and ranches in Navajo Nation serving the local markets of these communities.
The over-arching goals of the program is to promote the development of small and emerging food business in project areas, encouraging healthy eating and restoring the holistic wellbeing of Navajo people. By reconnecting with traditional foods and revitalizing knowledge and practices around those foods, the Navajo Nation can begin to proactively address the food related issues in the ways that restore holistic wellbeing. Restoring holistic well-being will have positive impacts on the health of the people, relationships of the people as well as the interconnectedness with the land, while also leading to greater self-sufficiency for the Diné people and the Navajo Nation

PDDP’s mission is “to inspire each other to do our best in service to all relations.” To fulfill their mission, the program will be guided and evaluated by the Goals and Objectives listed below. These Goals and Objectives also drive the performance criteria to monitor and ensure the success of the proposed program.
Goal #1: Develop a Native American Regional Food Hub to stimulate the development of small and emerging food businesses owned and/or operated by Native American entrepreneurs and business owners;
Goal #2: Create new business and marketing opportunities for Native American entrepreneurs;
Goal #3: Improve the success of existing and new business and job skills through technical assistance and training to ensure Native American’s self-reliance and selfsufficiency;
Goal #4: Create and save jobs by stimulating rural economic development in the project areas in the Western Navajo Agency and Coconino County;
Goal #5: Preserve and promote Navajo traditions, culture, art, and language though outreach and education.
